Launched in 1992, the Il Maestrale publishing house soon garnered an enviable reputation on the Sardinian and wider Italian market. Critical interest, the bestowing of important literary awards upon the authors in its catalogue, recognition from Italian and international academics, translation of the works into other languages – these are just some of the main results that justify the esteem in which it is held.
The process used by Il Maestrale to select which literary works to publish has changed, with the focus now on established modern-day Sardinian authors (both living and recently deceased), many of whose essential works had not been published for some time. The company also offers a publishing outlet for the contemporary literary scene in Sardinia through the issuing of unreleased works, including those by up-and-coming authors.
Il Maestrale has thus succeeded in implementing an editorial approach that is thoroughly “Sardinian”. However, it has for some time widened the horizons of its remit to take in the whole of Italy. Considerable work has also been done on international development.
Another sector is that of historical and historical/literary research, with an eye to the poetic/literary tradition in the Sardinian dialect.
